31. Haiti’s Law Against Zombies

The Haitian government takes cases of zombification very serious, so seriously, in fact, that there is a law on the books to help protect against it. Article 249 of the Haitian Penal Code states [2] that,

“It shall also be qualified as attempted murder the employment which may be made against any person of substances which, without causing actual death, produce a lethargic coma more or less prolonged. If, after the person had been buried, the act shall be considered murder no matter what result follows.”

This law was designed to make it illegal for practitioners of necromancy to ply their trade.

The extent to which Zombies have found their way into Haitian history is sometimes startling. In the late 50s to early 70s it is said that dictator Papa Doc Duvallier had a private army (tonton macoutes) that consisted entirely of zombies. It is also said that many of the slaves that were used on sugar cane plantations were zombies raised by voodoo priests.

Not everyone agrees with this contention (and we will look at that later) but for anyone looking to survive the Zombie Apocalypse one thing is clear – Haiti is not the place to setup camp.
