“Be amusing: never tell unkind stories; above all, never tell long ones.” –Benjamin Disraeli

Benjamin Disraeli was a primer minister, a statesmen, a socialite but above all else he had a writer’s sensibilities. What he’s saying (other than the fact that good stories should be succinct) is that storytellers need to like what they do.

Whether you are creating a documentary, writing a manuscript or telling a joke like Michael Kent in this segment’s video, make sure that you enjoy it. If you aren’t getting any joy out of the telling, your audience will be able to pick up on that. If your writing is listless, your audience will be able to sense that. If you find that your story isn’t going anywhere, it could be that you are telling the wrong one.
