Bottom Line: You know what we haven’t seen a lot of this round? Zombies. Last time we spent at least three reviews looking at some fantastic zombie-centric web series, and this time we have looked at exactly none. Since I really enjoy Zombies more than any grown man should admit, I decided to sit down with American Heart HD.

The episodes themselves are pretty long, weighing in at just under 10 minutes but the pacing is good and only a few scenes seem to drag. All in all American Heart is a good show for anyone searching for their Zombie fix.

We don’t know why but Web Series writers love Zombies. Maybe it’s because the makeup is easy, maybe it’s because we all secretly want an excuse to decapitate our friends and family for the sake of art. No matter what the reason, the love of Zombies has brought us more than its fair share of great web television.

The subgenre that seems to get the most traction in web television is the Zom Com, shows that are more Shaun of the Dead than The Beyond. Here are five shows to introduce you to the genre.

American Hearts

American Hearts combines the camp of Romero’s Day of the Dead with the joys of a roommate comedy. You have a group of people, locked in a hospital, dealing with just about everything but the horde of shambling monsters at their door.

Woke Up Dead

Everything is going wrong with Drex’s life, until he wakes up in a bathtub full of water and realizes he may just be the living dead. Woke Up Dead is a great Crackle orginal series that deals with the question, “What is it like to be a nerd and be a Zombie?”

I Am Not Infected

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be trapped in a frat house turned reality TV set with a group of idiots with the living dead as the only thing around to keep you company? Well, that’s the concept of I Am Not Infected. Honestly, this is one of the funnier attempts at the Zom-Com I’ve ever seen, give it a chance and it won’t be long before you find yourself addicted.

Semi-Dead

“Chris and Joe are roommates, both former military, trying to live normal, productive lives in this modern, Internet-dominated world… It’d be a lot easier though, if the city weren’t swarming with zombies.”

Semi-Dead is new to the arena but after two episodes I’m really enjoying where the series is going. There are only so many places you can go with a zombie roommate comedy, but Semi-Dead manages to show off some new tricks.

Zomblogalypse

Zomblogalypse is like a documentary but with a twist and that twist is, you guessed it, Zombies. What’s really entertaining about this show is that you get to see that life after the Apocalypse doesn’t have to be so serious. Sometimes it’s a lot creepier just trying to get on with your daily life.

Bottom Line: For anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to survive the Zombie apocalypse and have to spend your remaining days trapped inside of a frat house that has been recommissioned as the set for a reality TV show and taken over by idiots.

A show about three guys who are stuck in LA and surrounded by zombies. They are survivors.

As long as they are still alive and not infected they will keep posting videos.

Early in the series I liked the use of overlays and cell phone footage, it really makes you feel like you’re there, you know, at the wrong end of the Zombie apocalypse stuck in a frat house with morons. Later on, they do some nice work bringing us Zombies we can believe might actually want to eat our faces. (Style 4)

Pacing 4.5

Sometimes a show is just fun to watch, this is one of them. There is nothing particularly notable about the story itself, but it is well acted, well directed and all around entertaining. Even in a saturated genre like Zom-coms, it stands up as worth watching. The episodes are short, clocking in at under 3 minutes in most cases and they usually answer at least one plot question per show. All in all, it’s a satisfying watch that doesn’t take a whole lot of time to get through. (Storytelling 4.5)

This is definitely made for YouTube, but it’s shot with documentary sensibilities so that actually works pretty well. (Polish 3.5)
