Before you tell me that you don’t know any foreign languages, you don’t need to. Not this time, at least. There are dozens of sites that offer English translations of foreign newspapers. One of my favorites is Watching America, where you can see stories from the far flung corners of the globe rendered in English. I couldn’t tell you exactly how good the translations are, but they are usually extraordinarily readable.
Why should you care?
Other than the whole “widening your perspective” thing, there is another reason.
The rest of this story will be centered around the American newspaper business, much of it will be taking a historical perspective, looking at the present newspaper business through the bifocals of the past. Before we begin, I wanted to give you the modern equivalent, and let you see what American news looks like from the eyes of the rest of the world.
