They list estimated cost to advertise for hundreds of newspapers across the country. Their costs are based on a typical column inch of black and white advertising space and they don’t take into account seasonal changes or larger ad formats.
As an example, the New York Times with a circulation (as estimated by Gaebler) of 1,120,000 costs $1,196 to run. For the the Wall Street Journal, with its 2,062,000 readers the cost is $1,576.00. At first blush, with CPMs (Cost Per Thousand views) of less than a dollar, these rates don’t seem to bad, however, considering that nearly 25% of the average paper is taken up by advertising and the format described is extremely small, it would take a lot more money and a much larger ad to actually get your brand noticed.
